What is the Circular Economy?
The Circular Economy is a new economic paradigm that is regenerative by design.
The Circular Economy seeks long-term economic and ecological effectiveness by designing out pollution and toxicity; keeping materials and products at the highest value possible for the longest time possible; and ensuring that these become nutrients for new cycles of value once they reach their end of life.
Why is the Circular Economy relevant today?
Many countries and regions across the globe, Including the European Union, Canada and China, have approved legislative measures that mandate a transition to the Circular Economy.
In addition, the World Economic Forum, the World Resources Institute, the United Nations Environment Programme, and other notable organizations are pushing for an accelerated transition to a Circular Economy, while hundreds of the world’s largest global businesses have already pledged to transition to a Circular Economy with horizons as near as 2025.

The Circular Economy course at UC Berkeley is really great. It aims to transform our way of thinking, observing, analyzing, and seeing the world. The learning methodology is both profound and simple. In each module, Professor Maqueda invites us to reflect. The course went by too quickly and by the end we were left feeling as if it was goodbye for good. But as the instructor told us, his courses have a lifetime guarantee and we can get in touch with him at any time.

I graduated with a degree in Environmental Engineering a little over a year ago and had been working in a place where I was learning various terms regarding the circular economy. I became interested, found this course, and thought that as it was offered in Spanish, it was a perfect opportunity to deepen my knowledge of the circular economy.
The course fulfilled my expectations. It was dynamic and entertaining, with simple assignments but a lot of reflection on various topics and concepts. Some of the best features were the excellent instructor, the interactive platform, and the videos that complemented the content so well. It is a practical and enjoyable way to learn about a topic that is so relevant to the world, especially in these times of crisis.

Participating in this course changed my understanding of the circular economy. It helped me understand the need to design products for a world in which we depend less and less each day on a linear economy model, in favor of a circular model. It has also challenged me to think of truly circular solutions. In addition, I greatly appreciated the contributions from the highly diverse group, which added a lot of richness to the discussion forums.

I think it was a great experience and a worthwhile investment from the start. The instructors’ professionalism and willingness to create valuable programs and the ability to create content in Spanish makes their vision transcend. It further enables them to reach several nationalities eager to acquire knowledge, be part of the change, and make contributions from the sectors we represent.
